October 2009 is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

"I love my job as a receptionist. The Advocacy Center helped me realize my dream of working with people." ~ Andrew

The White House has issued a proclamation declaring October 2009 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month.  In his proclamation, President Barack Obama stated, "I call on all Americans to celebrate the contributions of individuals with disabilities to our workplaces and communities, and to promote the employment of individuals with disabilities to create a better, more inclusive America, one in which every person is rightly recognized for his or her abilities and accomplishments."

Locally, Tops Friendly Markets, an Erie County-based supermarket chain with stores in the Rochester area, is the recipient of an award from the state of New York for its record in hiring people with disabilities.  This honor was highlighted in the Democrat and Chronicle Business Briefs on October 12, 2009.
